What is evening primrose oil?
The evening primrose plant was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century where it became known as the 'King's cure−all'. In North America however, indigenous tribes were already using the plant as food and medicine for hundreds of years. The plant pertains to the evening primrose Oenothera biennis L., a wild plant native to northern America that bears no relation to the UK's native wild primrose. The beautiful evening primrose flower blooms for a single day, but its seed oil helps you bloom year after year. The seeds of the evening primrose plant produce an oil rich in the omega 6 fatty acids GLA (gamma linolenic acid) and LA (linoleic acid). LA is an essential fatty acid which the body cannot synthesise and we must obtain through diet.
